Interactive knowledge elicitation with SilverKnETs
The SilverKNeTs tool
SilverKnETs implements so-called knowledge elicitation games, which provide profound means for the elicitation of knowledge relevant to the generation of, e.g., decision-tree models. SilverKnETs has been developed at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in cooperation with the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ.
SilverKnETs is a knowledge elicitation tool written in Silverlight. The tool can be run in a browser on any platform for which a Silverlight plugin is available. It can be used for the systematic elicitation of knowledge through supervised (locally conducted) and unsupervised (remotely deployed) interactive interviews. Moreover, sociodemographic background data can be elicited as desired. The interactive interviews as well as the tool configuration, e.g., including different types of interviews, are configured by a so-called model file.
In the interviews, scenarios are being generated based on the configuration in the model file. A scenario consists of a set of context-dependent variables. For each variable, in each scenario, a so-called situation, i.e., a specific (pseudo-)random value, is generated. Based on the scenario, the interviewee must make a decision by selecting one (or more) pre-defined options. Furthermore, a rationale may be indicated by the interviewee by selecting from pre-defined options or individually in form of text. All scenarios, i.e., all situations for all variables, the interviewee decisions as well as the rationale are tracked in the background. They can be reviewed by the interviewer if desired at the end of the interview. The elicited data can be exported e.g. in the csv-format. In doing so, it can be further processed by a tool of the user’s choice.
